HOW MANY OF YOU DREAMED of becoming a fireman, chef, doctor, or astronaut when you were a kid? Or a veterinarian, artist, or journalist? You were likely told that you can be anything you dream of, it would take hard work and determination, but that you can do it!
HOW MANY OF YOU DREAMED you would one day live in Sweden? You probably did not even know there was a Sweden- but instead, dreamed about living on the moon- or in a candy castle surrounded by a chocolate moat. Or in Paris.
MANY OF YOU MADE YOUR CHILDHOOD DREAMS COME TRUE and have become the professionals and experts you hoped to become. So.. as the new year approaches, why aren´t you wishing for a new dress or a new car or a sunny vacation? ...Instead, many of you are dreaming you will get an interview, a job, or a praktik that leads to "something"-or even just recognition that your hard work, education, and experience from your country of origin "counts" here. Many of you are simply dreaming that you can continue your careers and we understand that because we do the same.
SVERIGES INTERNATIONELLA TALANGER WAS ASKED TO DESCRIBE THE "ECOSYSTEM" educated foreigners find themselves in. Why is it so difficult for an educated person to enter the job market, even when he or she is fluent in Swedish? Why is it so hard to find a qualified job in one´s field? To some of our partners in the Swedish business world, it sounded absurd that talent would simply be blocked out of the market. We agree and so do the experts in this video from Almedalen, called (translated) "Educated foreigners in a 7 year quarantine- is it reasonable?". The discussion is based on research done at Stockholm University and we feel it accurately describes the ecosystem: Almedalen: Utländska akademiker i sju års ”karantän” — är det rimligt?
SO AS THE NEW YEAR APPROACHES, do not ask yourself "why am I here?", "should I go back?" or "should I get a new dream?" Instead, promise yourself not to give up, to be more active in meeting each other, and to show those "on the other side" that you are Educated.Motivated.Talented. Because that is what we say about you ALL THE TIME.
Thank you everyone for an inspiring eight months. Sveriges Internationella Talanger is now almost 500 members strong! (Something we could never have dreamed of back in April.)
